Fibers of
my Being

Artist Statement

Fibers of my Being explores the construction of memory and the state of dissociation by creating tangible objects through craft, such as quilting and crochet, as a coping mechanism. Dissociation describes the spectrum of detachment from either one’s self or surroundings, often developed in response to trauma or anxiety, resulting in fragmented memories and sense of identity. By including craft and photography, each piece contains my experience with dissociation: overstimulation in social situations, the episode of feeling untethered or in pieces, and restoration through the grounding actions and repetitive movement of handicraft.
